WHAT IS THE GERBERA PROJECT?

We are an aspiring nonprofit organization that aims to provide comfort and solace to Jews in America in the face of rising antisemitism. Our mission is to honor the humanity of our Jewish brothers and sisters by promoting a safe environment that celebrates their unique identity and reminds them that there are still those in this world who will stand in solidarity with them against hatred.

WHAT DO WE MEAN WHEN WE CALL OURSELVES “AN ASPIRING NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION?”

At present, the Gerbera Project is a new, unincorporated organization. At present, Global Peace Media is serving as our fiscal sponsor.

The Gerbera Project is also looking for volunteers to serve on its future Board of Directors. Until a Board of Directors is in place, we cannot incorporate ourselves as a nonprofit. Individuals with legal, nonprofit, accounting and conflict resolution expertise are especially encouraged to apply.

If you are interested in becoming a Board member, or volunteering with any of our activities, please contact us at thegerberaproject@gmail.com or send a submission through our Contact Page!

HOW WILL WE MEET OUR MISSION?

In service to our broader mission and vision, these are the initiatives we have planned for our first year:

GERBERA PALS:  Create relationships between Jewish and non-Jewish children and youth via a pen-pal campaign, sponsored by churches and synagogues, and designed to offer comfort to Jewish kids during a time of great pain and uncertainty.  An additional purpose of this campaign is to encourage non-Jewish children, through written interaction with Jewish children, to see Jews as living, breathing souls with the same thoughts, feelings, concerns and, potentially, interests that they have.

RABBI STORY HOUR:  Prevent the development of antisemitic inclinations in young children by having Rabbi Story Hours, where they can learn to associate Jewish people and religion with positive elements.

GERBERA GAME NIGHTS AND TRIVIA NIGHTS FOR ADULTS:  Interfaith meetup activities to promote solidarity between Jews and non-Jews in a relaxed, playful atmosphere.  A brief Q&A could be done before each activity to give the former a safe space to express their fears and needs and/or the latter to ask questions to get a better understanding of their Jewish peers.

ON ANOTHER NOTE:

A significant part of making our Jewish friends feel seen is respecting how deeply they cherish their identity, customs and history.  The purpose of these activities is NOT to convert Jews or non-Jews to either faith.  They are simply meant to be acts of solidarity, fellowship and education.  Conversion will NOT be promoted.
